Gile Mountain Trail Improvement Project

In early August, a crew from Timber & Stones, led by Josh Ryan, arrived to help make eroded sections of the Gile Mountain Trail more durable. Thanks to grant support from the Vermont Recreation Trails Program, portions of the Gile Mountain Trail located above the powerline will receive extensive improvements this summer and fall. The trail is one of the most popular that the Upper Valley has to offer.  Wonderful views provided to visitors that climb the trail’s fire tower attract thousands of people each year.  To control trail erosion, steep slopes will be reduced using stone steps, drainages will be improved to avoid wash-outs, and gravel will be used to create a more durable surface.

Note: If you are visiting this trail, for your safety please yield to moving equipment. There will high-line operations occuring this week (aerial stone moving). If you'd like to help with that work this week, please e-mail info@uvtrails.org to offer your assistance.

The Norwich Trails Committee is currently partnering with the Upper Valley Trails Alliance, Vermont Youth Conservation Corps, community volunteers, and Timber & Stone LLC to complete these important improvements.  Thanks to Ken Smith and Malcolm Ward for working their business's schedules to arrange for stone and steps hauling up to the project site last week.
