Lebanon Safe Routes Task Force Creates Walking/Biking Travel Plans

The Lebanon Safe Routes Task Force has been working closely with the Upper Valley Lake Sunapee Regional Planning Commission to complete “Comprehensive Travel Plans" (see links below to view plans) for Lebanon's three elementary schools. The Travel Plans offer a wide ranging assessment of traffic and sidewalk conditions, current level of walking/biking activity, pedestrian-motor vehicle assessments, parent and student surveys, and interviews with key stakeholders to identify improvements that would enhance the walking/biking potentials at each school. Based on these plans, the City and School submitted a funding proposal to the State of NH DOT Safe Routes program that, if funded, will:
1. Add flashing lights to school zone signs on key approaches.
2. Add higher quality, longer lasting and more reflective crosswalk striping to 17 key crosswalks approaching the schools.
3. Allow the Lebanon Recreation and Parks Department to hire a Safe Routes Coordinator who will recruit and train walking school bus/bike train leaders at each school
4. Enhance enforcement of sidewalk regulations to keep sidewalks clear for walking.
5. Pay for an engineering study to re-direct traffic flow and develop cost estimates for the Hanover Street School parking lot, to eliminate unsupervised traffic crossings on school grounds.
6. Support pedestrian and bike safety education at each school
7. Develop additional one time bike/walk events at each school and integrate additional incentive programs to support increased walking on a regular basis.
The Lebanon Safe routes Task Force will continue to examine sidewalk improvements near the three schools, and may request funding for these, plus changes to the Hanover Street School entrance/parking area in a future round of Safe Routes funding.
