Upper Valley HEAL e-news keeps our community updated on activities and initiatives of our UV HEAL partnership.

1. What is Upper Valley HEAL and HEAL NH?

Upper Valley Healthy Eating Active Living (UV HEAL) Partnership links and supports community efforts to build the healthiest possible Upper Valley communities, with a special focus on Lebanon and the Mascoma towns. NH HEAL leads implementation of NH's Healthy Eating Active Living Action Plan.

2. Evidence-Based NAP SACC Consultation Coming for Local Early Care

The State of NH has awarded UV HEAL a contract to implement NAP SACC in 3 Lebanon-Mascoma area early care centers. The Nutrition and Physical Activity Self-Assessment for Child Care (NAP SACC) program is a practice-based intervention designed to enhance policies, practices, and environments in child care by improving:
  • nutritional quality of food served,
  • amount and quality of physical activity
  • staff-child interactions
  • facility nutrition and physical activity policies and practices and related environmental characteristics.

3. Mascoma River Greenway Celebrates 1st Mile Opening

The Mascoma River Greenway Coalition officially oepned the first mile of the Greenway, between the Old Yankee Store and the APD/Slayton Hill road area on January 31. Upper Valley Trail's Alliance constructed a Connector Trail between Mascoma Street and the Greenway that enables users to access the Greenway at the APD/Slayton Hill area.



4. "Walk Home" Buses Start at Mount Lebanon School

Parent volunteers at the Mount Lebanon School, working with Amy Ballou, a Physical Education teacher at the school, have started a "Walk Home" program every Friday this winter. Five "Walk Home" routes have been established.

5. Passport to Winter Fun Arriving in Schools and Clinics

Upper Valley Trails Alliance "Passport to Winter Fun" program is starting in schools over the next few weeks. The Passport program encourages kids and their parents to be active at lest an hour every day during the winter, with a special emphasis on outdoor winter activity. This year the Passport is going out to more schools and more grades than ever before. We welcome the Passport to the Enfield Village School and to new grades at the Canaan Elementary School! And for the first time, a special Passport is being made available to area pediatric practices as a tool for use with their patients and families.

includes the Children’s Hospital at Dartmouth-Hitchcock (CHaD), Alice Peck Day Memorial Hospital, Lebanon Schools, Mascoma Schools, Upper Valley Trails Alliance, Lebanon Recreation and Parks, Mascoma Valley Health Initiative, Vital Communities / Valley Food & Farm, Willing Hands Enterprises, and other individuals and community groups. Upper Valley HEAL is a community grants recipient of the HEAL NH Initiative. Funding provided by Foundation for Healthy Communities, HNH Foundation, Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield Foundation, Harvard Pilgrim Healthcare Foundation, Endowment for Health, and New Hampshire Charitable Foundation.
